Monster stat blocks in Fifth Edition are sometimes complicated and have a lot of moving parts. Unless you’re an expert at the game, it might be difficult to suss out how they are supposed to be run. I designed this guide to help gamemasters understand the core tactics of Fifth Edition monsters.

CR 1/4 Monster Tactics
We're re-releasing the CR 1/4 PDF FREE to the public today, but if you were a patron you would...
If you're looking for a quick way to decide what CR monsters and how many to send at your party using the EMHD difficulty classification system, here is the sheet I'm using for my own reference.
The first tab explains how to use it. Then the sheet organizes the tabs by level.
This is a good "quick-and-dirty" way to build encounters.

The first big adventure of the new year will quickly remind you that, yes, it is indeed winter (as if all the snow everyone's been getting isn't enough).
I've got 17 locations to fill. Usual rules apply:
1) Keep it clean
2) Nothing too anachronistic
3) No proper nouns
4) One word per patron
Leave a single word down in the comments below. I'll use your word to craft an a...
Hope you're all well-rested. As soon as start the fulfillment process on our last two Kickstarters (Legends of Omeria should be shipping within the next month or two and Pexia/Hot8 are both in final production), we're going to start doing "Quickstarters" for the Gamemaster's Survival Guides.
The DMDave team will be "out of the office" starting Thursday, December 23, 2021 until Monday, January 3, 2022.
Thank you so much to everyone for your continued support! None of this would be possible without you. The entire DMDave team is grateful to you and wishes all of you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season.
But I figure since there's a lot of new folks here who've recently come from Instagram, you probably don't know all the big players in the field yet. For my money, one of the best music composers working today is our friend, Michael Ghelfi. I constantly listen to his stuff (when I'm not listening to Metallica, of course) while I'm writing things, especially if it's super u...
I thought I might end the year with an adventure that uses monsters that aren't in the SRD. If you don't already know, I'm limited by what I can use by Wizard of the Coast's systems reference document (SRD). This means I can't use certain creatures like beholders, mindflayers, etc. since they aren't included in that document.
I've listed some monsters I'm interested in writing below. Pick your favorite and I'll w...

Happy early holidays. While Scott's finishing up Pexia's Guide to Omeria, I'm in the home stretch for fishing up Hand of the Eight. All that's left is the Citadel of the Danaavrakti that features the final conflict between the characters and the story's overarching villain.
I've got 20 rooms to fill in this 10th-level adventure.
Help me fill these rooms by giving me a one word suggestion down in the c...

Here's kind of a weird poll, but last night I got kind of a clever idea for a dynamic fighting system that allows people do a little bit more during combat. The rules aren't necessarily Fifth Edition (I'm thinking of basing them on BRP, Call of Cthulhu's system), but they really do make combat feel more fluid where high Dexterity allows a character to take multiple attacks during a turn.
If you haven't been keeping up with my Instagram, I've been writing up tips and tactics for Fifth Edition. I hope to release a large PDF of all of them (plus a few along the way) along with a print version sometime in January.
I figure I'd do a four-part series, each focusing on a different tier of play. These books will cover:
