The demon in the dark cell | El demonio de la celda oscura [Pin]

The first time we met wasn't on the day of the ceremony. Before that, some novices and I were taken to the confinement cells, where they keep all the demons who might serve the order or those who have yet to be decided what will be done with them. I don't usually rummage through Rubi's memories, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't remember it. I think I was about 14 years old and I was so excited... I had never been allowed to go to that part of the Church and the very idea of being able to visit those demons, brought me one step closer to becoming a true blood brother. Some of my companions were frightened, others seemed unaffected, but I couldn't hide the smile that crossed my face. I stopped at every cell and looked around impatiently. There were so many new things that I didn't hesitate to stop and supervise everything. From security mechanisms, to creatures, to jailers, to cell dimensions and layout... I didn't want to forget anything. At some point during the visit I separated from the group. As I did not know well that labyrinth excavated under the church, I simply decided to do what anyone in my place would have done: explore on my own. It shouldn't take long to find someone responsible there.
I walked for what was more than twenty minutes in the dark without getting anywhere. I didn't know if I was going up or down, I had no idea which direction my companions had taken and I had no idea where the people in charge of that place must be. The paths forked every so often. I found myself in long rooms equipped with weapons and torture tools and other long rooms but with the height of a ventilation vent. Although I stopped to observe everything, no place particularly caught my attention. Not, at least, until I came to a section that was advertised as the 'condemned' area. A huge excitement came over me knowing that this was the place where the demons were being prepared to synchronize with a brother.
To my disappointment, some of the cells were empty. In others, the demons, who were inside, looked strange, they seemed to have been locked up there for too long and their capacities were diminished. Their skins were sallow, their bodies were emaciated or atrophied, some had even lost their minds completely. I also found some cells full of protections, chains and other types of gadgets that indicated the dangerousness of the individuals. I was somewhat disappointed not to find anyone who seemed prepared for the ritual. That meant that my goal of becoming a blood brother was not as close as I would have liked.
"Hey, boy, why don't you come closer so I can get a better look at you." A deep and somewhat broken voice made me turn in on myself. The cell door had a small barred window from which I could see inside. I stepped forward a little and looked inside.
Yellow eyes emerged from the darkness. He was as imposing as he was incredible, almost six feet of pure muscle, long copper hair and a smile that would have made others' blood run cold in their veins. For me, however, what I felt was much more like admiration. I had listened to Abbess Eris' warnings and kept my distance, though I'd be lying if I didn't feel like getting closer. I thought about how amazing it would be to have a companion like him.
"Novice... Did you get lost or did they bring you here?" The demon leaned on the bars of his cell and looked me up and down.
"I wanted to come here, but no, I just got lost. I was looking at some cells and suddenly... Puff! All my companions disappeared as if by magic." I admitted without a hint of doubt. The prisoner didn't answer immediately, I guess he didn't believe I was so clumsy as to get lost in a place like this.
"Of course... You would only have to come a little closer." I looked at the floor and I knew that if I listened to him he could reach out and grab me by the neck if he wanted to.
"I don't think that would amuse Abbess Eris. She's very strict about these things." I said, trying to act like what was expected of me. If I made a mistake I could die or, worse, be expelled.
"Is she even here? She hasn't even gone looking for you, has she? Maybe she just wanted to let you out of her sight." I clenched my jaw, that kind of comment is the kind of thing we're taught to try to ignore. If we let ourselves get carried away with thoughts like that, we'd be easy prey to demonic manipulation. I tightened my fists and decided to sit on the floor of the hallway.
"This place is so big, almost a labyrinth, I wouldn't be surprised if it took them several hours or even days to find me. But I think we could keep each other company until then." I smiled.
"How nice..." The demon rolled his eyes and got lost in the darkness of his own cell.
"Why don't we play questions." I suggested.
"I think I'll pass, you little squirt." Although I couldn't see him, I knew he was inside his cell. I could hear him scratching on the walls or on the floor. I couldn't be sure and I couldn't tell what he was trying to do.
"Oh, come on, I think we could be good friends." I initially only heard a snort in response.
"Not even dreaming about it." Far from discouraging me, his words only suggested that he was actually as eager as I was to talk to someone. Although sullen, demons like company too, especially if they haven't been visited for so long.
"Well, if you don't know what to ask, I'll start... What's your name?" Having a way to refer to him would make the conversation much easier.
"Rubi, the impaler." his voice sounded an octave lower, " And you want to know why they call me that?" He said, leaning out from inside and banging the bars hard. If it had been an ordinary door, I'm sure he would have bent them like a couple of sticks of butter.
"Because you impale things." I widened my smile, seeing how I had now fully entered the game.
"No, people... silly." Rubi grimaced in frustration, I guess it was something I should have known. In class they talked a lot about methods of torture and execution, they could fail me for not knowing something so basic.
"It makes sense." I admitted as I thought about what kind of demon Rubi might belong to. Although the first idea that came to me would have been the right one. He seemed too friendly to be a wrath demon.
"Are you not afraid of anything or what?." That sudden question surprised me a little. I tried to think if I had a phobia or if something really scared me. But the only thing I was really afraid of was not being able to become a good blood brother.
"Why would I be? You seem like a really nice guy." Rubi opened his mouth to retort but a loud knock on the door that connected to the outside hallway caused him to go back into hiding in the shadows. I jumped to my feet. Abbess Eris looked at me with those furious, rage-filled eyes I had seen so many times before and in four steps she was at my level.
"What are you supposed to be doing here?" She asked out of her mind.
" I got lost." A blush crept up my cheeks as the rest of the novices entered the hallway and watched me with an inquisitive air. The Abbess grabbed my ear tightly and tugged at it.
"Ow, ow, ow... it hurts." I moaned as she dragged me out of the cell corridor.
"If you want to get your own demon so badly, why don't you start by learning how to follow a line?" the rest of my companions began to laugh as we left the room. Nova tripped me and almost ate the door. What a mess. I was supposed to make a good impression that day, not an even worse one.
"I was attentive, I promise. It was just for a second..."I tried to excuse myself, not realizing that I hadn't said goodbye to my new friend. What I didn't know was that soon we would see each other again.

—Bien, si no sabes qué preguntar, empezaré yo…
