I had the unexpected pleasure of being invited to see Grace Jones last night at gay pride in West Hollywood. I had met her manager a few times in Paris, and so I was delighted when he reached out and said that Grace wanted to invite me and meet me. Iโve been in the room with Grace Jones before, but wouldnโt have dared introduce myself!
Iโve seen her play many times, and she was fantastic as always.
After the show, I got shuffled into her trailer dressing room where she was getting undressed, and recovering from the performance. Brigitte Nielsen was also in the room. I said my hellos, and did my best to express my admiration and gratitude. Meanwhile, freshly shucked oysters were being brought in for her aftershow mealโฆgood idea! Maybe Iโll try that sometime! ๐ฅ๐ I only ever thought about getting the perfect firm banana, a bottle of champagne, and a modest cruditรฉs platter!
I didnโt stay in the dressing room long, I got the feeling that she and Brigitte were good friends, and I didnโt want to intrude or overstay my welcome.
I did not ask for a picture.
I took a photo of Graceโs famous hula hoop, and Maripol took a Polaroid of me.
In hindsight, I should have asked her to take a Polaroid of me and Grace. They seem to be very good friends, so Iโm sure she would have not been afraid to ask, like me!
There are lots of amazing people I admire, who are quite famous, and I never really ask for photos. I spent numerous times with Prince at his house, and I just always felt that it would be a violation to askโฆ.and I was always more interested in being invited back! Which I was. ๐
Now, thatโs not to say I mind taking photos with people who ask me. I think itโs just a little bit different with certain people who you can feel donโt invite many people into their inner circle, and or used to the photo being peopleโs first priority. And yes, I do decline if someone asks for a picture when they shouldnโt; like say, after a massage, during a facial, while eatingโฆ I definitely have my boundaries, as we all should.
Anyway, I wish I had a picture of me and Grace to share with you, but I have a great memory, and this hula hoop is legendary!
