“Hi, love.â€
The deep, British drawl was the last thing she expected. For a moment, she was at a loss and then, “Grayson?â€
“I had to great creative since he’s monitoring your phone, email, and any other method of communication you have. Today, he just so happened to mention where you were so I thought I’d take advantage of the situation and ask what you have planned for his birthday.â€
She blinked. “I'm sorry?â€
“His birthday.†Pause. “You knew it was coming up, right?â€
“Yes, but he doesn’t like to make a fuss about it.â€
“You aren't going to let that stop you, are you?"
"I can't make him do something he doesn't want to do,†she said a tad defensively.
There was an undignified, hooting laugh on the other end.
“I don’t know what’s so funny," she muttered.
“You are, sweetheart.â€
“You want to let me in on the joke?â€
“The joke is you thinking you have no influence over him. He would do anything for you.â€
“You’re mistaken.â€
There was a long pause and then he said very seriously, “Some day soon, you and I need to talk.â€
